Church Caving In to Quarry Work?
FABIANA, Italy – A millennium-old marble-laden church in this Tuscan village may be in danger of collapse because of … marble quarrying.
United Press International reports that the Pieve della Cappella is showing a crack that continues to form through the floor, tombs, alter and baptisimal. And, according to town officials, it’s due to dynamite being used at an adjacent marble quarry.
The town’s mayor claims that the quarrier no longer holds rights to the stone in hills below the town, but a legal ruling on the matter wasn’t expected until at least this month. Meanwhile, the crack continues to grow.
Michelangelo reportedly worked on the Romanesque church in the 1500s. However, no remedial work by anyone is in the works at present, since the town council fears repairs will be wasted as long as the dynamite blasting continues.
