Marble Floor Dropping Out?
FLINT, Mich. – Some exquisite marble flooring at a local historic building is – literally – sinking like a stone.
The Flint Journal reports that the 15’ X 22’ lobby floor at Durant-Dort Carriage Co., used by the local visitors bureau and a historical society, dropped in some places up to three inches from the level of surrounding wood trim.
An official for the non-profit foundation that operates the building theorizes that the sill is rotting – the structure’s been soaked by three floods in the last 100 years – and that the floor needs to be jacked up for repairs. The foundation hopes to salvage as much of the marble as possible, although some of the stone is cracked.
Repair costs for the building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are estimated at $20,000-$30,000. A $10,000 grant, awarded to the Durant-Dort’s foundation last year, will help.
