Incorporating the latest technologies in energy-efficient design, the building is currently under review for LEED® Silver certification. The wings and end pavilions are clad in split-face and sawn Hadrian limestone from Texas; the clock tower and fluted columns flanking the main entrance use Texas Sunset Red split-face and remnant granite from Cold Spring Granite in Marble Falls.
By stipulating that the tool marks run in the vertical direction, shallow flutes add texture to the limestone columns without additional cost. The play on shapes, patterns and finishes pushed the boundaries of the limestone’s expressive possibilities — accentuating the articulation of the façades, creating more texture, and enhancing the effect of light on the building’s surface.
Granite remnant 1 1/2” strips, usually discarded in the process of manufacturing countertops, were assembled as pre-cast units to clad the columns. The strips were aligned in a quarter-cylindrical form, before pouring a concrete backing to adhere the pieces together, resulting in self-supporting units, each 7’ long.
