BSI Cites Pelli With Bybee Prize
ITASCA, Ill. – Cesar Pelli, founder of Cesar Pelli and Associates and former dean of the school of architecture at Yale University, is the 2004 recipient of the James Daniel Bybee Prize from the Building Stone Institute.
The Bybee Prize, named for the late long-standing member of the BSI, is awarded to an individual architect for a body of work executed over time and distinguished by outstanding design and use of natural stone.
Some of Pelli’s more-exceptional designs with natural stone include the World Financial Center in New York; NTT headquarters in Tokyo; the U.S. Courthouse in Brooklyn, N.Y.; and the Aronoff Center for the Arts in Cincinnati.
Pelli, born in Argentina, served his apprenticeship as a project designer in the offices of Eero Saarinen. He also served as director of design for DMJM and partner for design at Gruen Associates, both in Los Angeles; he became dean at Yale in 1977 and served until 1984, and continues to lecture at the university.
Pelli will formally receive the awards during ceremonies on May 21 at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. The presentation will accompany a special retrospective of his work.
