Annandale Aids In Capitol Project
BOYERS, Pa. – Annandale Sandstone is currently furnishing raw slab material for interior walls, columns, and hand-railings for the U. S. Capitol Visitor Center Project in Washington.
Annandale, a quarry operation 40 miles north of Pittsburgh, submitted a mock-up panel for the project; after a viewing in the Capitol Rotunda, the sample was selected by the Capitol Preservation Commission. Architect of the Capitol Alan M. Hantman, FAIA, and CVC Project Executive Bob Hixon guided the Commission. Other commission members involved in the selection process included 17 members in the 108th Congress.
Dallas-headquartered Manhattan Construction Co. received the Sequence 2 contract for the center in April 2003. Boatman and Magnani Inc. of Capitol Heights, Md., holds the mason contract for installation of Annandale sandstone, as well as other masonry work.
Annandale is supplying 151,000 ft² of raw slabs to produce 45,900 cubic feet of finished material. Typical pieces for the interior wall are 4’ 11 5/8” x 1’ 8 5/8” x 3”, with a honed finish.
Construction of the center, located under the East Front of the Capitol, began in April 2003, and is expected to be completed before the spring of 2006. The three-level, 580,000 ft² facility is currently budgeted at $144 million.
